Organist at St Peter’s Rome from 1608 until 1643 and one of the great masters of organ composition, Frescobaldi attracted vast crowds to hear his beautiful music. He was known for his dramatic inventiveness and the brilliant construction of musical ideas. His Fiori Musicale inspired many composers including J.S.Bach. Song of Songs
The sensuous poetry of Solomon’s Song of Songs has inspired composers throughout the ages to write some of their most passionate music. The first concert in the Choir of Newman College Concert Series is an exploration of this extraordinary repertoire, from the elaborate chants of the first centuries after Christ to the finely crafted polyphony of Palestrina’s Canticum Canticorum and the luscious sonorities of twentieth-century composers such as Pablo Casals, Marcel Dupré, Percy Grainger and Ivan Moody.

Louisa Hunter-Bradley and David Macfarlane are joined by Ruth Wilkinson (recorder and viola da gamba) and Ryan Williams (recorder) for a performance of music for voice and recorder, focussing on the music of Bach, Handel and Telemann. Requiem Aeternam
A performance of Gabriel Fauré's Requiem in its original chamber proportions. The strings, harp, horns and organ create an intimate atmosphere, with a range of subtle colours. The refinement of Fauré's Requiem and Cantique is complemented by three more recent works, exploring the themes of life and death, grief and hope.

As part of the September international organ concert series, David has been invited to perform on the stunning Rieger organ at Scots' Church. November 19, 2011 Suzuki Organ Scholarship Celebrity Recital
Avondale Memorial Church, Cooranbong, 7:30 pm

The Suzuki organ program is flourishing around Newcastle, with some 25 students, some as young as five, enjoying learning the organ. The concept is groundbreaking and involves new pedagogical concepts for organ teachers. David's recital is to raise money to provide scholarships to encourage more students to try this approach.

A step into the music of pre-classical Germany. Music by C.P.E. Bach, W.F. Bach, G.P. Telemann, and Anna Amalia von Preusson allow these musicians who have shaped two generations of early music playing in Australia to showcase their musicology and musicality. December 2 to 4, 2011 Newman College Advent Festival
Newman College Chapel, 887 Swanston St, Parkville
Details to follow shortly; David is soloist on Saturday morning for 9 am Terce, playing Italian organ music interspersed with Schola Cantorum, will play continuo for three other concerts in the series and organ for two carol services, one on Saturday night and one on Sunday night. This festival, when run two years ago, was stunningly successful, with many people choosing to reside in Newman College for the duration of the festival. David loses his best page turner for the 4 pm Saturday and 4:30 pm Sunday concerts as Kieran Macfarlane is the bass singer in these concerts which feature a chamber vocal and instrumental ensemble.
