Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers

The Choir of Newman College joins with New Zealand's Affetto Players directed by Gary Ekkel to tour through New Zealand with a performance that inspired The Age's critic to write that this groups performance of the 1610 Vespers was one of the "stand-out performances" for the year when performed in January 2014 as part of the Ballarat's Organ Festival. Twin tenors Daniel and Matthew Thomson along with Netherlands Radio Choir soloist Helen Thomson form a perfect trio of soloists. Advent music by Buxtehude and Bach will be followed by the Choralphantasia Wachet auf Op. 52 No. 2 by Max Reger. David has sought the opportunity to perform this major work in Melbourne for some time, but the combination of an instrument with great power, multiple manuals under expression with a range of soft stops, resonant acoustic and a sound palette sympathetic to the German romantic idiom is a rare combination in Australia, let alone in Melbourne.
